Hot Tub Error Code Guide
GFCI Trip, Hot Tub Keeps Tripping the Breaker
UrgentThe spa's GFCI or breaker shuts off power, instantly or after a while. It's a safety device doing its job, so find the fault instead of fighting the breaker.

Every hot tub is protected by a GFCI (ground-fault circuit interrupter), usually in the disconnect box near the spa or in the main panel. It cuts power the moment it senses current leaking to ground. When it trips, it is protecting whoever touches the water or the equipment, so the goal is to find the leak, not to keep the breaker on.
When it trips tells you a lot. A breaker that trips the instant it's reset points to a hard fault that is always present, like a shorted heater element or a wet connection. One that trips only when the jets or heater come on narrows it to that component. One that trips after minutes or hours often means a part that fails as it warms up or gets wet, such as a pump seal leaking onto the motor.

Most Common Causes
- A heater element that has cracked or corroded and leaks current to ground (very common, and often the cause of instant trips once the heater calls for heat)
- A jet or circulation pump motor with moisture inside, usually from a leaking shaft seal
- Water or condensation in the equipment bay, a junction box, or a connector
- Damaged wiring, including rodent damage in the cabinet
- An ozonator, light, or other accessory with a failed component
- A worn-out GFCI breaker, or a breaker that is undersized for the spa (less common, and needs an electrician to confirm)
What You Can Safely Check First
- 1
Reset the GFCI or breaker once. If it trips again right away, leave it off
- 2
Note exactly when it trips: instantly, when jets start, when heating starts, or after a while. That's the most useful clue you can give a technician
- 3
Look (without touching anything inside) for standing water or obvious leaks under the spa cabinet
- 4
Never bypass the GFCI, swap in a non-GFCI breaker, or open the equipment bay with power on
- 5
In freezing weather, keep the cover closed and call promptly, because a spa without power can't circulate
Brand-Specific Notes
Ground faults happen on every brand: Bullfrog, Hot Spring, Jacuzzi, Sundance, and the rest. The heater and pumps are the usual suspects regardless of the control system. We isolate one component at a time with the power safely managed, then repair or replace the part that's leaking current.
How Urgent Is It?
Treat a repeat-tripping GFCI as urgent. It means current is going somewhere it shouldn't, and in a Utah winter, a spa without power can begin to freeze. Leave the breaker off after one failed reset and get it diagnosed.
GFCI Trip FAQs
Why does my hot tub breaker trip instantly?
An instant trip usually means a fault that is always present, most often a shorted heater element, water in a pump motor, or a wet or damaged connection. Leave the breaker off after one reset and have the components tested one at a time.
Why does my hot tub trip the breaker when the jets turn on?
That points to the jet pump circuit, often a pump motor with moisture inside from a leaking seal. A technician can confirm it by isolating the pump.
Is it safe to keep resetting the GFCI?
No. One reset to rule out a fluke is fine. If it trips again, the GFCI is detecting a real fault. Don't bypass it or replace it with a standard breaker.
