A blank topside display or a completely dead spa points to a loss of power or a failure in the control system. Sometimes it's as simple as a tripped GFCI or breaker; other times it's a failed topside panel, a control board fault, or a wiring/connection problem.
Because this involves the spa's electrical system, some checks are owner-safe (resetting a GFCI) and others should be left to a technician who can safely test voltage inside the equipment bay.
Also searched as: blank topside, hot tub no power, dead control panel, GFCI tripping, spa won't turn on.
Most Common Causes
- A tripped GFCI at the spa's dedicated breaker/disconnect
- A tripped house breaker or a power interruption
- A failed topside control panel (common wear item, especially with moisture intrusion)
- A failed control board or blown board fuse
- Corroded, loose, or water-damaged wiring/connectors in the equipment bay
What You Can Safely Check First
- 1
Check and reset the GFCI at the spa disconnect and the house breaker once
- 2
If the GFCI trips again immediately, do NOT keep resetting it — a repeated GFCI trip signals a ground fault that needs professional diagnosis
- 3
Confirm the topside cable is seated (only if easily accessible and the power is off)
- 4
Look for obvious signs of water intrusion or rodent damage near the panel if visible
- 5
For anything beyond a single GFCI/breaker reset, call — live electrical testing is not a safe DIY task
Brand-Specific Notes
Topside panels and control boards are brand- and pack-specific. We replace Balboa and brand-proprietary topside panels and boards, install the correct part, and reconfigure dip switches or settings to spec so the spa runs correctly after the swap.
How Urgent Is It?
A completely dead spa in winter is a freeze emergency — with no power there's no circulation or heat. If a single GFCI reset doesn't restore power (or it trips right back), get it diagnosed quickly to protect the plumbing.
No Power / Blank FAQs
Why does my hot tub GFCI keep tripping?
A repeated GFCI trip means current is leaking to ground — often a failed heater element, a water-damaged pump, or compromised wiring. Don't keep resetting it; the fault needs to be isolated and repaired by a technician for safety.
Can a blank hot tub display be just the panel?
Yes — topside panels are a common failure point, especially with moisture over time. But a blank display can also be a board fuse or power issue, so we confirm the cause before replacing parts.
