Hot Tub Error Code Guide
HL / HFL / HL, High-Limit Trip
ImportantThe high-limit safety sensor cut the heater after sensing excessive element temperature — often from low flow or scale.

HL (or HFL) is a high-limit trip. A dedicated safety sensor detected the heater running too hot and cut power to it. It's distinct from OH (which watches water temperature) — the high-limit watches the heater/element side specifically.
A high-limit trip is almost always a symptom of something else: the element is overheating because water isn't moving past it fast enough, or because scale is insulating it.

Most Common Causes
- Low flow from a dirty filter, low water, or an airlock (element overheats without enough water passing it)
- Scale buildup on the element concentrating heat
- A failing high-limit sensor tripping prematurely
- A stuck heater relay driving the element too hard
- A failing circulation pump reducing flow through the heater
What You Can Safely Check First
- 1
Clean or replace the filter and confirm a full water level
- 2
Bleed any airlock after a recent refill
- 3
Power off at the breaker, wait a few minutes, and restore power to reset the trip
- 4
If it trips again quickly, stop resetting it — repeated high-limit trips point to scale or a failing component
- 5
Note whether HL appears alongside FLO or a sensor code, which narrows the cause
Brand-Specific Notes
High-limit protection exists on virtually every platform — Balboa, Bullfrog, Hot Spring — though the exact code text varies. Repeated trips usually mean scale or flow on the element side; we test flow and element condition and descale or replace only what's needed.
How Urgent Is It?
One trip can be a fluke; repeated high-limit trips mean the heater is overheating for a reason and should be diagnosed before the element or board is damaged. As with any no-heat condition, treat it as urgent in freezing weather.
HL / HFL / HL FAQs
What's the difference between OH and HL on a hot tub?
OH watches the water temperature and warns of overheated water; HL (high-limit) watches the heater/element side and trips when the element runs too hot — usually from low flow or scale. They can appear together.
Why does my hot tub keep tripping the high-limit?
Repeated high-limit trips almost always mean the element is overheating because of low flow (dirty filter, airlock, weak circ pump) or scale insulation. Clearing flow and descaling usually fixes it; a failing sensor is the other common cause.
